UNHCHR Pillay hails CA term extension, hopes for OHCHR mandate renewal

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay has hailed the extension of Constituent Assembly (CA) term in Nepal.
During her opening statement at the 14th Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva Monday, Pillay expressed hope the extended period would be utilised for successfully completing the peace process.
“I welcome the decision in Nepal on 28 May to extend the Constituent Assembly by one year,” aid Pillay. “I hope that this period would be utilised to finalise a new constitution with the strongest possible human rights protections and to complete other components of the peace process.”

Pillay also expressed hope for the extension of her representative office in Nepal. I look forward to renewing OHCHR’s mandate in the country to continue our support to the peace rocess, she said.
